Deal or No Deal: A Statistical Deal
This, however, does not mean that the current offer is the most we can hope to take home. I guess it must be the flag of my disposition, out of hopeful green stuff woven. It has more to do with: Any student of statistics will tell you that each set of variables can only be evaluated on that specific incident. I am also in your situation — I just found this site and have only skimmed its contents.
Song of Myself
Here was her scenario:. She had 5 suitcases left that contained the following amounts: Deal or no deal, miss thang? Unbelievably to me, at least , this dumb woman, at the behest of her equally dumb husband, uttered the words the audience was just dying to hear: It was one of those gut instinct things that you just kind of know…ya know? This morning, however, I figured I may as well look into the math a little more just to see if I was correct in my opinion.
Anyway, on with the numbers…. Then again, you always have the banker in there as the x-factor, so that argument represents a worst case scenario. Enter probability theory , and more specifically, the value that you can expect to earn based on the number of remaining suitcases and their associated dollar amounts. Not surprisingly, this is astutely named — wait for it — the expected value.
At the beginning of Deal or No Deal, the contestant is presented with 26 suitcases that contain the amounts shown in the previous image, and the expected value can be calculated from the following equation:.
You mathematicians out there will already have noticed that the expected value for Deal or No Deal is simply the arithmetic mean, or more simply, the average dollar amount remaining in the cases.

These low pairs are deceptively strong, and will often land novice players in a lot of trouble if they are over-valued. A small pocket pair is ahead of the majority of other hands pre-flop as long as an opponent does not hold a higher pocket pair. However, post flop play can be incredibly tricky if our hand does not improve.
When holding a small pocket pair, there is a very high chance that the flop will bring over cards. This will then give us an underpair to the board, and it is going to be very difficult to try and find out whether or not we are ahead.
If we make a bet and get called, this gives us little information in whether or not our hand is ahead. Our opponent may have a higher pair, a drawing hand , a lower pair or any other possible hand. The simple bet and call does not tell us a lot about what our opponent is holding, and it will prove to be costly to try and find out if we are ahead by betting on the turn and river.
The true strength of a small pocket pair lies in when they improve to make a set on the flop. A set is when you make 3-of-a-kind on the flop with a pocket pair, which is different to trips, where you make 3-of-a-kind using one holecard and two cards from the board. A set is a very hidden and strong hand , and it is possible to make a lot of money from them when they hit because opponents will not often suspect them. Find out more about the different types of 3-of-a-kind hands in my article on sets and trips in Texas Hold'em.
Texas hold 'em also known as Texas holdem , hold 'em , and holdem is a variation of the card game of poker. Two cards, known as the hole cards, are dealt face down to each player, and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages. The stages consist of a series of three cards "the flop" , later an additional single card "the turn" or "fourth street" , and a final card "the river" or "fifth street". Each player seeks the best five card poker hand from any combination of the seven cards of the five community cards and their own two hole cards.
If a player's best five-card poker hand consists only of the five community cards and none of the player's hole cards, it is called "playing the board". If you play the board on the river, then you can do no better than tie the other player s in the game if no player can make a better hand than the board represents, using either or both hole cards. Players have betting options to check, call, raise, or fold. Rounds of betting take place before the flop is dealt and after each subsequent deal.
Texas hold 'em is the H game featured in H. E and in H. In Texas hold 'em, as in all variants of poker , individuals compete for an amount of money or chips contributed by the players themselves called the pot. Because the cards are dealt randomly and outside the control of the players, each player attempts to control the amount of money in the pot based either on the hand they are holding, or on their prediction as to what their opponents may be holding and how they might behave.
The game is divided into a series of hands deals ; at the conclusion of each hand, the pot is typically awarded to one player an exception in which the pot is divided between two or more is discussed below. A hand may end at the showdown , in which case the remaining players compare their hands and the highest hand is awarded the pot; that highest hand is usually held by only one player, but can be held by more in the case of a tie.
The other possibility for the conclusion of a hand occurs when all but one player have folded and have thereby abandoned any claim to the pot, in which case the pot is awarded to the player who has not folded. The objective of winning players is not to win every individual hand, but rather to make mathematically and psychologically better decisions regarding when and how much to bet, raise, call—or fold.
